5 Things You Should Never Do Right After Eating (And What to Do Instead)

Your stomach needs time to process food, and staying upright helps everything move in the right direction.

What to do instead:
Stay upright for at least 30–60 minutes after a meal. If you’re tired, sit on the couch, read, or do something relaxing—but avoid lying flat. A gentle walk is even better (more on that below).

2. Don’t Do Intense Exercise
Jumping into a hard workout right after eating can cause:

Stomach cramps

Nausea or dizziness

Poor performance

Slower digestion

When you eat, your body sends more blood to your digestive system. Intense exercise pulls blood toward your muscles instead, which can disrupt digestion and make you feel sick.

What to do instead:
Wait 1.5 to 3 hours before doing heavy exercise, depending on the size of your meal. If you want to move, choose light activity like a slow walk or gentle stretching.

3. Don’t Smoke

Smoking after meals is especially harmful for your digestive system. It can:

Increase stomach acid

Worsen acid reflux

Irritate the stomach lining

Interfere with nutrient absorption
